NADA SAID
My article is about “STDs disrupt genetic bottleneck that usually constrains HIV infection.”
Scientists have shown that HIV faces a genetic "bottleneck" when the virus is transmitted heterosexually from one person to another, by way of the genital mucosa. The results explain why prior infection by other sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) makes individuals more susceptible to HIV infection.
A team of researchers identified 20 heterosexual couples soon after infection occurred and obtained viral genetic sequences from both partners. They examined the most variable region of the virus' env gene, which encodes a protein forming the outer coat of the virus. Approximately 90% of the couple recipients were found to be infected by a single viral variant of HIV-1. However, that variant was not the same in each case.
For comparison, the researchers also analyzed a group of newly infected individuals who were infected by someone other than their spouse. This group showed more variety in viral sequences, with 3 out of 7 individuals infected by multiple variants. Overall, out of 42 newly infected people studied to date, all five infected by multiple viral variants had evidence of genital inflammation or ulceration.
In these cases, it appears that the bottleneck was enlarged due to the disruption of normally protective mucosal barriers by STDs. These findings suggest that the genital mucosa provides a natural barrier to infection by multiple genetic variants of HIV-1 that can be lowered by inflammatory genital infections.
To identify newly infected individuals, the team collaborated with public health programs that enroll thousands of heterosexual couples with one HIV-positive partner in Rwanda and Zambia.
This article is very important because it shows the gravity of HIV in heterosexual can be, and it’s interesting because I choose it of course and it shows the latest scientific discoveries.
wiam:According to a new study from Finland ,girls who smokes when they are teenagers are more likely to experiense obesity as adults .Their waists size are 1.34 inches larger than nonsmokers's waist are as adults, but it is not a weight problem for men.
It is important to know the consequences of a cigarette, and this is one of the effects of smoking in a young age. Some girls smokes to be attractive or to be cool, but in the future they wont be anymore those girls will be ugly and fat.
I agree to worn people of the effects of smoking especially teenagers.Smoking make girls fat when they are adults and not boys which will make girls smoke less because they care more about their appearance than boys.

Krista:
My article talks about how hair can be a very good fertilizer. Plants need things such as water and sunlight, but in addition to that, plants need nitrogen to grow. Combined with other "compost materials" hair has been proven to act as a fertilizer, however studies have not proven if hair can act as fertilizer on its own. Scientists deduce that the difference between hair and natural fertilizers is because of the time it takes for hair follicles to break down or decompose. This information could be important for farmers to know, because this would facilitate the fertilizing process. Farmers could simply go to hair dressers and buy all the hair they'd recently cut off and use that instead of fowl smelling fertilizer. :) YAY FOR HAIR! :D
http://www.livescience.com/animals/090123-spitting-cobras.html
My article is about Spitting Cobra's accuracy. Apparently the spitting cobra can "spit" It's venom up to 6 feet accurately. The cobra has a muscle that pinches the venom glands at such force that it pushes the venom at a velocity towards their prey. The Cobra actually spins it's head as the venom is being projected to spray the victim and have more of a chance of reaching the victim's eyes. The cobra used to be considered to have the best accuracy of snakes, but as we have just found out it is more of a spray then a concentrated spit.
This is a cool article because I didn't even know cobras could spit. The cobra is already known as one of the most hurtful snakes of the world and i though it was cool that they can actually spit.
My article is about The Tasmanian devils of Australia. In this most recent decade a grave problem has started to scare a lot of Australians and Tasmanians that they might be the next species to succumb extinction. The Devils that were made famous by Looney Toons, known as “Taz” have been diagnosed with a rare contagious disease. This disease is a cancer that spreads throughout the body from biting and mating. The population of Devils in Tasmania and Australia has been cut in half because of this most unfaithful occurrence.
The government is Australia has a plan to build a three-foot wall to keep the infected devils out of untouched territory. But doing this would cause problems that are far unseen and unneeded by the biological populations of this region. The wallabies and some types of kangaroos would be effected and would probably have to migrate.
I think that the idea to have a wall is having too much intervention, the more intervention I think the more the overall stability of the area will go down, nature has a special way of fixing this, it just takes a little bit of faith.

MALAK BENSLIMANE:
+Mars Has Methane, But Life?
It has taken many years, but now scientists can confirm that there is methane on Mars. In our planet, methane is a bioproduct of bacteria, but it may have another production source in Mars.Observations have shown that methane is present only during the summer. It might mean that it is produced under the surface and released when the ice on the surface melts. However, methane might be a result of reactions between water and rock or simply produced by rock. It might also have been produced ages ago and is just now being released. A new research in 2011 might give us more answers.
I believe this article is very important because it may suggest the presence of bacteria on the planet Mars. Not only that, but it gives us more understanding about the gaseous composition of this planet. However, new research on the subject is needed. Methane can have many sources; having methane does not necessarly indicate the presence of life. Nevertheless, it is a very interesting discovery and can be even more puzzling if in fact it can be proven that methane on Mars is produced by bacteria.

http://www.livescience.com/culture/090121-cute-babies.html
This article claims that women are able to tell if a baby is cute or not at a young age. According to the article young women are better at telling this than older women.
I think that this is stupid, because whether a baby is cute or not is completely up to a person's opinion. Unless the baby has a butt for a face or something, then there is no way to say whether it is cute or not other than just by your opinion.
