Think about what you had for lunch: Was it a hamburger? A chicken sandwich? Barbecue? What about vegetables? Would it surprise you to learn that what you eat can affect the whole planet?

It can — in a big way. Last week, scientists attending the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago presented new studies showing how food and its production affect the globe and its warming climate. The researchers had some bad news for meat-eaters (which is good news for cows!). They also offered some suggestions for how to eat in a more environmentally friendly way.

You’ve probably heard of global warming: For many years, scientists have warned that our planet is getting warmer. If current trends continue, then animals may start to die off and life could get very difficult for everyone. The temperature is on the rise because for more than a century, human kind has been releasing massive amounts of gases into the atmosphere, called “greenhouse gases.” These gases surround the planet and keep heat from escaping the atmosphere. You can think of them as a blanket for the Earth that traps heat. One of these greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide.

What does this have to do with food? A big chunk of the carbon dioxide that we put in the atmosphere every year comes from the process of making and eating food, the scientists reported in Chicago. The production of meat contributes a lot of that carbon dioxide. And much of meat’s contribution comes from beef, which is responsible for releasing even more warming gases into the atmosphere.

The process of making a hamburger, for example, requires a lot of energy. A cow has to be fed and raised on farmland, and cow manure is a major source of methane — an especially potent greenhouse gas. The cow has to be slaughtered. The meat has to be processed and shipped to a consumer, which takes fuel. Most of the cow won’t even be used for meat that people eat.

By the time a hamburger finally lands on a dinner plate, it has taken a heavy toll on the environment. According to Ulf Sonesson of the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology in Goteborg, Sweden, the process of making a one half-pound all-beef burger adds the equivalent (made up of other greenhouse gases) of about 19 times that hamburger’s weight in carbon dioxide.
The message from the research is clear: We can drastically reduce the production of global-warming gases by eating less beef. (That’s healthier, too, since Americans eat twice as much beef as is advised by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.) Other kinds of meat like pork and chicken do less harm to the environment — at least in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases released. Nathan Pelletier, a scientist Dalhousie University in Canada, reported that if everyone in industrial countries (like the United States) substituted chicken for beef, we would cut meat’s contribution in these countries to the greenhouse warming of Earth’s air by more than half.

All kinds of meat, the scientists reported, are harder on the planet than vegetables. To grow and eat a pound of potatoes, for example, sends less than one quarter-pound of carbon dioxide or equivalent warming gases into the air. So shifting our diet to less meat and more vegetables, as it turns out, may do the world some good.

Beautiful eyes, flawless complexion, black long hair, a slim physique but dark circles under your eyes can spoil the whole appearance. In today's world almost everybody has dark round circles in the area near the eyes. According to a survey 9 out of 10 people have these dark circles. Here are some useful home remedies to lighten dark circles under the eye, but before that you should also know the factors that cause these dark circles.

What Causes Dark Circles?

There is no one reason or factor that causes dark circles, but there exists multiple factors and each of these have to be tackled individually to get rid of dark circles. Excessive exposure to stress can lead to depression which consequents in big round black circles near the eyes. Lack of sleep and over exertion can also be one of the reasons

Lightening The Dark Round Circles
1. Make potatoes or cucumber slices and place them on your eyes.

2. Prepare a mixture of lemon and tomato juice and then apply the liquid daily, twice.

3. Use cold tea bags to relieve your eyes from stress and dark circles.

4. Make a concoction of tomato juice, lemon, mint leaves and a pinch of salt. Drink this to get rid of dark circles.

5. Keep sunglasses handy and wear them when the sunrays are hitting your eyes directly.

this article is pretty good and useful for us girls, so thats why i posted it and plus the teacher said that we can post any article as long as its science related!!

Canadian scientists announced that they found the smallest meat-eating dinosaur in North America. The remains of the tiny dino were found in 1982 but were recently rediscovered in a museum drawer. The remains were near Dinosaur Provincial Park, a protected area in the Canadian province of Alberta. The park is a popular place for dinosaur fans and researchers alike — more than 30 dinosaur species have been identified there.Weighing about 4.2 pounds, the little dino, whose name is Hesperonychus elizabethae, was the size of a chicken. The previous record holder for smallest meat-eating dinosaur in North America weighed more than 20 pounds, or more than five of the newly identified dino.About 75 million years ago, this newest tiny dino roamed the southern part of Alberta, just north of Montana. The scientists say the dinosaur had its diet probably included insects, lizards and birds. The fossils suggest that the dinosaur is related to other small raptors (another kind of dinosaur) found in China.i think it's important to know that there is a dinosaur in the size of a chiken because i would never imagine it.i agree that there could be a dino as big as a chicken.

Peanut allergies are among the most common and most dangerous food allergies. A tiny exposure to peanuts can mean big trouble for a person with a peanut allergy, with symptoms ranging from sneezing or coughing to the constriction, or narrowing, of airways. Some people die from the exposure. But a tiny exposure may help scientists find a cure. A recent study suggests that some children may be able to beat their allergic reactions to peanuts by gradually introducing tracing amounts of the nut into their diets. It’s too early to say for certain, so if you have a peanut allergy, do not try this at home. But the first results look promising. Two teams of scientists have been experimenting on a group of 29 children, with an average age five years old, who are allergic to peanuts. At the beginning of the study, each kid received less than 1/1,000th of a peanut per day. (Imagine splitting a peanut into 1,000 parts!) Over the course of the study, the children gradually increased the amount of peanuts in their diets. At home, their parents sprinkled peanut powder on their food, and in the laboratory, the children drank solutions with peanuts dissolved inside. Nine of the children have been receiving the treatment for two years. Five of those nine now appear to be free of their peanut allergies, says Wesley Burks, a pediatric allergist and immunologist at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. These five kids can eat peanuts with no problem. “They are putting peanuts in their diet,” Burks says.
Of those nine, the other four have not benefited as much from the therapy. Burks and his team will release data from the other 20 children in the study later this year.i think this is important because it;s going to help alot of children, and i agree that it's a dangerous allergy.
