Article Summaries 8th Grade 5th Grading Period

Okay, new idea. Since most of your grades are going to be destroyed by article summaries, I have a new plan. There will be one post this grading period for each grade. You must post 4 different article summaries by 12:30 on April 30th. This means that you can post 4 in a row, or one a week, or any combination that you desire. If you have already submitted articles, they will still count.

Also, you must post one response to another student's article summary. This means that if nobody turns in an article summary until the last minute, all of you will lose points.

In conclusion, by April 30th, 12:30, you will have 4 article summaries and 1 response to another student's summary. That is worth 25 points, or close to a test grade. Easy, right?

Enjoy,
Mr. Mills

P.S. If you look, there are some comments already posted.

What Is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is the medical term for inflammation (irritation and swelling) of the sinuses. It's usually caused by infection.
Our sinuses are the moist air spaces within the bones of the face around the nose. The frontal sinuses are located in the area near the eyebrows; the maxillary sinuses are located inside the cheekbones; the ethmoid sinuses are between the eyes; and the sphenoid sinuses sit behind the ethmoid sinuses.
When we're healthy, our sinuses are filled with air, making our facial bones less dense and much lighter in weight. Sinuses also play a role in how our voices sound.
Infection with viruses or bacteria — or a combination of both — can cause sinusitis. Generally, someone with a cold also has inflammation of the sinuses. This is viral sinusitis. Allergies also can lead a person to develop sinusitis.
When the nasal congestion (stuffiness) associated with the common cold or allergies doesn't allow the sinuses to drain properly, bacteria can become trapped inside the sinuses, leading to bacterial sinusitis. Bacterial sinusitis tends to make someone feel sicker than viral sinusitis. A person with bacterial sinusitis usually will have more facial pain and swelling than someone with viral sinusitis, and might also develop a fever.

Can I Prevent Sinusitis?
You can lower your risk of getting sinusitis by making some simple changes in your home environment. Try using a humidifier during cold weather to stop dry, heated air from irritating your sinuses, which can make them more susceptible to infection. Clean the humidifier regularly because mold, which can trigger allergies in some people, forms easily in moist environments.
Taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to relieve pain and inflammation. A cool-mist humidifier may soothe your sinuses. Warm compresses usually help with facial pain. Some doctors suggest saline (salt-based) non prescription nose drops to keep your nasal passages moist.

The most important thing to remember about sinusitis is, even though chances are the type you have isn't severe, it's still important to see A DOCTOR. If you do turn out to have a bacterial infection, prompt treatment can help prevent the infection from getting worse or spreading, and it will help you get better faster. So don't forget!!!!

I think this article is very important because it gives us all the informations about this inflammation and how we can prevent our self from it.

The greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, for example) trap energy from the sun. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space and Earth’s average temperature would be about 60ºF colder. Because of how they warm our world, these gases are referred to as greenhouse gases.

Have you ever seen a greenhouse? Most greenhouses look like a small glass house. Greenhouses are used to grow plants, especially in the winter. Greenhouses work by trapping heat from the sun. The glass panels of the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping. This causes the greenhouse to heat up, much like the inside of a car parked in sunlight, and keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter.

The Earth’s atmosphere is all around us. It is the air that we breathe. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere behave much like the glass panes in a greenhouse. Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, passing through the blanket of greenhouse gases. As it reaches the Earth's surface, land, water, and biosphere absorb the sunlight’s energy. Once absorbed, this energy is sent back into the atmosphere. Some of the energy passes back into space, but much of it remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to heat up

This is a good article because it informs us about the importance of the greenhouse effect in our atmosphere and also in our life.

Human Health

Climate change may affect people's health both directly and indirectly. For example, heat stress and other heat related health problems are caused directly by very warm temperatures and high humidity. Untreated, heat stress can be a very serious medical problem. Scientists suspect that, in many places, climate change will increase the number of very hot days that occur during the year. More hot days increases the possibility of heat related health problems.

Indirectly, ecological disturbances, air pollution, changes in food and water supplies, and coastal flooding are all examples of possible impacts that might affect human health.
How people and nature adapt to climate change will determine how seriously it impacts human health. Some people and places are likely to be affected more than others. Generally, poor people and poor countries are less likely to have the money and resources they need to cope with preventing and treating health problems. Very young children and the elderly adults will run the highest risks.

I agree that our health is affected by the climate changes and we have to know that we must find a solution against the pollution which is going to kill our world.

The Difference Between Baking Soda And Baking powder.

It seems as though baking powder and baking soda are both the same, except there are certain things that make them different. Baking soda is pure bicarbonate so when it gets mixed with moisture and honey, chocolate, buttermilk etc. then there is a certain reaction that happens. What happens, is it causes carbon dioxide bubbles, then they expand under the heat of the stove and that causes the baking goods to rise. Now, baking powder, is also bicarbonate except it includes the acidifying agent already, including cream of tartar, and the dry one being starch for instance. You must bake the item write after mixing it if it includes baking powder. So, there are differences.

I do think this article is important because you should know the differences between baking powder and baking soda. What if a recipe called for baking powder but you only have baking soda, then you say oh, well and put it in. Uh oh, that is a problem, because believe it or not they are different!

Yes, i do agree with this article, there are differences between these 2 no matter what. Even though you may think they are the same.

Global Warming
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-twentieth century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the last century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that anthropogenic greenhouse gases are responsible for most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the twentieth century.
This article is important because it says what global warming is, it says how global warming temperature has increased, and it also says what is responsible for making global warming occuring. I think that it's very useful to know all this information to try to prevent global warming.
Yes, I agree with this article because it states all facts about global warming, how it happens, who is responsible, and how to stop it.

gene
by: hatim mrabet

A gene is the basic unit of heredity in a living organism. All living things depend on genes. Genes hold the information to build and maintain their cells and pass genetic traits to offspring. In general terms, a gene is a segment of nucleic acid that, taken as a whole, specifies a trait. The colloquial usage of the term gene often refers to the scientific concept of an allele.

The notion of a gene has evolved with the science of genetics, which began when Gregor Mendel noticed that biological variations are inherited from parent organisms as specific, discrete traits. The biological entity responsible for defining traits was termed a gene, but the biological basis for inheritance remained unknown until DNA was identified as the genetic material in the 1940s. All organisms have many genes corresponding to many different biological traits, some of which are immediately visible, such as eye color or number of limbs, and some of which are not, such as blood type or increased risk for specific diseases, or the thousands of basic biochemical processes that comprise life.

Malaria Overview
Malaria is an infection of the blood that is carried from person to person by mosquitoes. The disease has been recognized for thousands of years and once was found almost everywhere except in the most northern areas of the world. Malaria has been wiped out in North America, Western Europe, and Russia. It remains a serious problem in much of the tropical and subtropical world, however.

Millions of people continue to be infected every year, and probably up to 1 million of them die. Although the United States is malaria-free, hundreds of cases a year are still reported here. Most of these are people who acquired the disease overseas.
I think that it's a good article
because it prevent as by the danger of malria.

Pollution

Pollution is waste materials or harmful chemicals discharged into the water, soil, or atmosphere. This contamination affects everyone and everything it contacts. Current technology is being developed to use machines to remove or contain contaminated materials. Through an awareness of the consequences of pollution and the means to prevent it, people will develop a desire and responsibility to keep their world clean

Most types of pollution can cause some type of harm. Some pollutants can make people sick! As the world population continues to increase, more complex, technologically advanced machines will be developed to make life better, but they may also cause new environmental problems. Everything people do has the potential to cause some type of pollution if we are not careful. However, with a lot of thought and creativity, new machines can be created to reduce, contain, or control pollution.

I totally agree that we have to be more aware of the causes and negative effects of pollution, we, human being have to find ways to prevent or reduce it by being more responsible and less selfish. WE, teenagers, have to develop a desire and responsibility to keep our world clean.

0k my article is about Love, whic doesnt I believe doesnt exist, but here is what psychologists and scientists think about love.
Love is a cocktails of chemicals which makes our bain fall in love. You choose a partner, but you are only a victim of nature's lovely plan! :D Psychologists have shown that it takes 90 seconds and 4 minutes if you like someone or not.
55% is through body language.
38% is the tone and speed of their voice.Only 7% is through what they say. Haha its quite suprising. There is 3 stages of love, the first stage is lust, the second stage is attraction and the third stage is attachment. Oxytocine and
Vassopressin are important hormones of love.Oxytocine is a hormone that is released by men or women when they are in love, and after having a sexual relation. Vassopresin is also released after sex.
I dont really believe in love, because love for me is for ever. And that doesnt exist, what only exists is crushes or when you strongly like someone.

Oh wow, the icecaps are meltng!! hehe!! :DIt’s hard to imagine a mountain range without snow-covered peaks. But that may soon be the case in countries in or near the tropics. Studies show that the ice that sits atop the world’s highest mountains is vanishing at an alarming rate, threatening to leave the summits bare.Although Earth’s atmosphere is warming nearly everywhere, the greatest warming has been taking place at high elevations and in tropical portions of the world. Most mountain peaks are high enough that the snow that falls onto them will stay frozen year-round. That’s because air at high altitudes is less dense and holds less heat. As the snow piles higher and higher, the bottom layers become compressed into ice, forming a glacier, a slowly moving river of ice. :D
I think its very important because the ice caps can melt and the seas can overflow which can harm us a lot! ANd many other animals wont be able to adapt to their environment, and so do we!! :S good job humans for destroying Earth!

Anomalous White Dwarf

by: hatim mrabet

Twenty-four unusual stars, 18 of them newly discovered, have been observed in new Hubble telescope images. The stars are white dwarfs, a common type of dead star, but they are odd because they are made of helium rather than the usual carbon and oxygen. This is the first extensive sequence of helium-core white dwarfs to be observed in a globular cluster, a dense swarm of some of the oldest stars in our galaxy.

A new study suggests that these helium-core white dwarfs have had their lives cut short because of their orbital dance around a partner star.

"Helium-core white dwarfs have only about half the mass of typical white dwarfs, but they are found concentrated in the center of the cluster" said Adrienne Cool, professor of physics and astronomy at San Francisco State University, who co-authored the study with graduate student Rachel R. Strickler. "With such low masses, the helium-core white dwarfs ought to be floating all around the cluster, according to theory. The fact that we find them only in the central regions suggests that they have heavy companions -- partner stars that anchor them to the cluster center."

all the students fills tired on the begining of the year it s because a think in our mind needs sugar so thats why you need to eat candies but not a lot because it can turn into fats wich is a bad thing. scientists had just found a substance that we can eat and does not turn into fats so it is a good thing.

i think it is good because it helps to get energy and does not turn into fats so i wish that they could sell them as a medicen.

Fish is good for you. But if you can't stand eating fish, you might still be in luck. Thanks to some crafty genetic engineering, omelets, hamburgers, and other foods of the future could have some of the health benefits of fish, without smelling like the sea. Fish such as trout and salmon are loaded with fats called omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are much better for you than the omega-6 fats found in red meat or poultry. Omega-3 fats make your heart healthier. Omega-6 fats do the opposite.Amazingly, worms known as nematodes have a gene that converts omega-6 fats into omega-3 fats. A group of researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston wanted to see if they could tap into the power of this particular gene. So, they took it out of some worms and put it into some mice. The experimental mice were then raised on the same diet as a group of normal mice. After 8 weeks, muscle tissue from the experimental mice had more omega-3 fat than omega-6 fat. This was a huge improvement. Normal mice have far more omega-6 fat than omega-3 fat. Researchers hope eventually to be able to put this worm gene into cows and chickens. The resulting milk, beef, and eggs would then be rich in good fats and as healthy for your heart as a slab of grilled salmon.

Meryem Bousfiha: I accidently posted it in 11 th grade so Im posting it here ! Btw this is my 4th for this 6 weeks
My article is about Darwin and his ideas about evolution.
In the nintenth century, most people started out and began to think about evolution. Darwin has carried it, and made theories about it which has been accepted and soon were tested as being true.
He read a book and was later convinced by his proof that uniformitarianism provided the correct understanding of the earth's geological history. What made him start with his theory was taht he has found species in no other part of the world, though like ones exist on other places. Darwin was shocked by the fact that the birds were slightly different from one island to another. He realized that the reason to why this difference existed has something to do with the fact that the various species live in different kinds of environments. He has found other species like birds that have different kind of beeks which make them adapt more to their environment. So he thought that they changed their beeks overtime, just so that they could adapt more to their environment. So he thoughjt that traits which you are born with are the traits that will be passed to your offspring.
I agree with this and the theory of Darwin. I find it make a lot more sense than Lemarcke's. I also belive in evolution, that organisms has been changing over time. I find this article very important because it explains everyhting about life, and how life started. How we are now and how we changed over time. I also like the way how Darwin looked around him , and thought about all the same species that have variations which can make them adapt to their actual environment.
So its very interesting.... ;)

Summary of Hatim's article about genes! Yes, Im done with the articles of this 6 weeks!! :D
Genes control the heredity of all the living organisms. Genes hold the information to construct us and pass genetic traits to children. A gene is a segment of nucleic acid that, and it specifies a trait. I agree with this article because its all true, and Hatim didnt even say his opinion or negotiate it. But I think its very important because without genes we wont exist at all, and the genes make up our hereditary traits which are later passed to our offsprings. I also agree with it because there is nothing to disagree about ;)!! :P So yeah, its very important because the genes make us, and it makes our traits ! It controls how we are white, black, pale or if we have blue, green, gray, black or brown eyes. If we have a big nose or a small nose... Yeah, genes controlled how sponge bob is yellow and hot!! :P I know Im stupid because I really hate school !!
So yeah in conclusion, genes make up our trait, and its very important because we wont exist without it. Yeah I said that one hundred times!
Bye!! XOXO

Mohamed space is so big that todaays fastest rocket would take 100,000 years to reach the nearest star beyond space. so to lear about space astronmers use the telescope.
telescopes collect the light of distant objects and manify it allowig it to show us planets star etc.............

the first telescopes known as the refractor, used lens to collect light. in 1617 sir issac newton invented the reflecting telescope which used a mirror to collect light. the bigger the mirror the more we can see and vice versa. so bigger telescopes show more stuff.

whats continental drift?
continental drift is the theory that all the plates had slowly drifted to where they are today and we knaow this as a peace of evidence because humans discovered all sorts of kinds of dinosaurs and same kinds too on different peace of land and that why it is a peace of evidence.
